A goalkeeper’s position is one of the most difficult to master. A goalkeeper is a position in football that is unlike any other. However, it is a football position that relies on others for success as an individual. Goalkeepers require strong defenders at the back. A goalie can be left embarrassed if a defender cannot stop an attacker and enables them to goal.
To be successful in football, a goalkeeper must possess specific skills and characteristics. It will be difficult for a goalkeeper to succeed at the highest level without these skills. Here are the 7 skills to help you become a world-class goalkeeper.
1. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR TEAMMATES
Many goalies overlook the need to converse with their teammates. During a soccer game, always communicate with your players. You will make it easy for your teammates to mark the opponents if you communicate. It is critical since your opponents will be allowed to do whatever they want if you don’t mark them. Another thing to remember is that your teammates won’t be able to view the entire field. So you will need to advise them which opponents to target.
As the goalkeeper, it’s your job to lead the team, especially your defense, and keep everyone organized so that too many shots aren’t taken. Of course, this is a coaching role, but goalies are directly in front of the net and may pick up on patterns as the game progresses, so they usually know where defenders are needed in a game situation.
2. BLOCKING THE HIGH BALL
One of the skills to become a goalkeeper is to block a high shot. Instead of attempting to catch a ball, you can barely reach, you may opt to push or punch the ball away if your opponent takes a high shot. Keep your attention on the ball, not the person kicking it or opponents on the other side of the field. Bend one of your knees towards your body while jumping to create a barrier to protect yourself from crashes on crosses and other plays where there may be a crowd near the goal.
3. CONFIDENCE
Another essential quality that all goalkeepers must have is confidence. A player’s confidence permits them to complete the tasks in front of them. When a player lacks confidence, they mentally backslide, making it tough to overcome the obstacle.
4. MUST HAVE EFFECTIVE DECISION-MAKING SKILLS
A goalkeeper’s ability to make decisions may be the most crucial trait they possess. When goalkeepers are called into action, they must react quickly. Players must respond swiftly and make split-second judgments.
5. KNOWS HOW TO COVER ANGLES
You will also need to know how to cover angles if you want to be a competent goalkeeper. The closer you are to your dispute, the more difficult it will be for them to pass you into the net. If you are facing an opponent who is rushing at full speed toward you, don’t stand on the line and pray for the best! Instead, dash at them and enlarge yourself. When heading for the ball, though, you should not lie down on the ground too soon.
An experienced opponent will wait for you to make it easier for them to get past you to make the first move. One clever technique is to wait for your opponent to make the first move, dive, and get the ball as swiftly as possible. When the opponent pushes your defense, an alert goalkeeper understands that they cannot simply stand on the goal line and hope for the best. They must continually move and alter their position so that strikers have to shoot around them.
6. DIVING SKILLS
Diving is also beneficial to you, and you should always strive to land on your side with the ball firmly gripped in your stomach. To protect your head, don’t dive with your head first. Instead, dive from the side. The risk of diving headfirst is that your opponent will kick your head instead of the ball, resulting in a significant injury.
7. UNDERSTAND THE STRENGTH OF YOUR OPPONENTS
Unless you are up against an exceptionally skilled forward, most players will look at where they’re going to shoot. Then what are you going to do when your opponent is incredibly excellent, and you can’t read their body language to figure out where he’ll shoot? One method you could employ is to examine your opponent’s supporting foot. They will generally shoot in the same direction as their feet. If you are truly committed, you could watch one or more moves of your opponent to see what they do in different situations.
The success of those goalkeepers has been connected to their dedication, hard effort, and passion. Keep in mind that nothing attains for free, and if you genuinely want to be a successful goalie, you will have to sacrifice your own time as well!
