Despite being a small aspect of the game, knowing drills to improve soccer throw-ins with power and accuracy is valuable. If you want to keep possession, you will need to be good at them because every team is guaranteed a few throw-ins per game. And possibly threaten the opposition’s penalty box. A careless soccer throw-in can give the opposition possession and perhaps lead to a goal for your team. The following are the drills to improve soccer throw-ins to help you be one of the best players.

Understanding The Basic Soccer Throw-In

STEP 1: PROPERLY POSITION YOUR HANDS ON THE BALL

It may seem insignificant, but how you position your hands on the ball is crucial. On opposing sides of the ball, you want your hands to be in the same spot. Your thumbs should almost touch to assist you in achieving more significant elevation and distance when you launch the ball. This will help you rocket the ball forward. It would be best if you pointed your elbows outwards while holding the ball behind your head with your hands tightly clasped.

STEP 2: TAKE A POSITION ON THE SIDELINES

To make the soccer throw-in legitimate, you must return the ball to the exact spot where you took it out of play. When you move to throw the ball in, your feet should be behind (or touching) the line but not crossing it. When you launch the ball onto the pitch, both feet must be on the ground. Both of your feet will be side-by-side in a standing throw. If you want a run-up, get a few feet away from the sideline before sprinting up and throwing the ball into play. Most players in this situation will plant one foot on the ground after their run. And then drag their other foot forward to help them chuck the ball.

STEP 3: LEANING BACK TO GENERATE POWER

You will produce more power on the throw-in if you arch your back slightly rather than only using your arms for strength. When you move your arms, back, shoulders, and legs together, you will generate significantly more force than if you only move your arms. You will be able to throw the ball far with a run-up and this “full-body” method. If you only need to deliver a quick pass to a close teammate, you may not need to rush up or lean back.

STEP #4: TOSS THE BALL ABOVE YOUR HEAD

You want to toss the ball forward with the ball clutched in your hands behind your head, with your feet firmly planted on the floor, propelling your arms and hands forward using the forward motion of your body before releasing the ball over your head and following through with your arms. Remember that the ball must start behind your head for a throw-in to be lawful.

STEP #5: FLICK YOUR WRISTS ON THE RELEASE

Even after you have let go of the ball, keep your head up and your eyes facing in the direction you’re throwing it. It will aid in the accuracy of the throw. A slight movement to bring the ball above your head and a small wrist flick will be enough to complete the throw-in for a short throw. Allow the ball to pass above your head while flicking your wrists to give it extra power for a longer throw.

STEP #6: WALK INTO THE FIELD AND TAKE YOUR PLACE

After throwing the ball, rapidly return to the pitch and either resume your defensive position or shift into a position that will assist your side in moving up the field. Remember that you can’t touch the ball once you’ve thrown it in until it’s been touched by another player.

Rules to Remember in Soccer Throw-In

A throw-in can be ruled illegal in various ways, so it’s a good idea to be aware of the regulations from the start. They are simple to remember and will save you from throwing a foul ball.

A throw-in must meet the following criteria:

Now that you have learned the rules and mastered the drills to improve soccer throw-ins, it’s time for you to level up. With a bit of practice, you will be able to take advantage of throw-ins like a pro.
