ways to help young athletes overcome anxiety before their game

Even the most accomplished football players can face stage fear. Consider your child preparing for their first major performance or competition. It might be terrifying! The good news is that these nerves before a performance are perfectly normal and common among football players. The trick is to figure out how to accept and constructively cope with these feelings so that they don’t interfere with their performance. Here are some helpful tips for helping young athletes overcome anxiety before their game.

Learn How To control Your anxiety

Even the most seasoned performers and athletes might feel pre-performance jitters, so your child must learn to relax and manage their stress on the day of the event.

Some football players have a pre-performance ritual of putting them in the appropriate frame of mind. To loosen up, they may take deep breaths to settle their anxieties or shake off their limbs. You may encourage your child to make this a part of their routine before going on stage, whatever works best for them. It will help them manage tension and stay focused.

Be prepared

Encourage young athletes to practice to overcome their anxiety. It is one of the best methods to prevent your youngster from becoming apprehensive before a performance. When football players are well-prepared, they are less likely to freeze on the field. Encourage your youngster to practice with confidence as much as possible until they are entirely relaxed and prepared. They will gain confidence as they practice.

Practice proper deep breathing

Football players can use numerous activities to quiet the mind and reduce worry and stress. A few examples include meditation, yoga, and deep breathing. Stressful feelings will melt away as you breathe deeply in and out, extending your abdomen with each inhalation. Let them take a deep breath and relax.

Have enough sleep

It is tough to stay alert, concentrated, and recall a pattern when you don’t get enough sleep. As a result, football players should get adequate sleep at night to avoid weariness. Help your child develop a “no tech” time before bed to ease into sleep if they have trouble sleeping due to video games, cellphones, or other distractions.

Recognize nervousness as a normal feeling

The sooner young athletes knows that anxiety is a normal and understandable emotion, the easier it will be for them to accept and get past their feelings.

People worried before a performance frequently overanalyze prospective faults and become overwhelmed by emotion, causing them to freeze. It starts with a misunderstanding of nervous feelings and an inability to get past them. Once your child realizes that they will feel apprehensive, they will understand that it is a normal part of the process and does not indicate a lack of preparation or a likelihood of future failure.

Focus on healthy foods

A healthy, balanced diet is essential for all football players, young and old. Caffeine and sugar in excess can create unpleasant side effects such as exhaustion, irritability, and gastrointestinal discomfort: substitute veggies, lean meat, or other protein sources for fast food and fizzy drinks. A nutritious diet will provide your child with the energy and stamina to practice and perform a fantastic performance.

Smile before, during, and after the game

Smile even if you don’t feel like it. Because your brain assumes that if you are smiling, you must be pleased, forcing your face to grin might help you feel better and calmer. It will serve as a reminder of everything your child has accomplished to get to this point. The brain-body relationship is reciprocal.

Final Thought

Nervousness before a performance is normal, and it’s your child’s body’s way of assisting them in performing at their best. Put those negative thoughts and convince your child that everything will be okay. Let your child do their warm-up regimen again. Your child will feel more prepared, which will help them perform better.
