On a Sunday evening, a bombshell hit the football world. Reports about the “European super league” were rampant – a said plan that included six premier league clubs. Around 2018, Germany’s Der Spiegel reported the said “European Super League” after uncovering documents from football leaks that outlined the competition.

The Super League’s idea was for European football clubs to cut ties with UEFA and start their competition in 2021. The report by Spiegel was dropped like a bombshell that created a massive shockwave among football. It was claimed that the Super League would be a 16-team tournament that would be most likely to begin this 2021. The competition has a similarity to the Champions League, except that UEFA would play no part in the European Super League.

The European Super League favors “some” of the strongest, most prominent clubs in European football. With the 16 competing teams, 11 will be labeled as core founding clubs. They most likely would be immune to relegation, while the remaining five places would be made up of teams that could relegate from the competition.

Public reactions

According to Former Premier League executive Chairman Richard Scudamore – There must be a consequence for the 6 English clubs that tried to join the ill-fated European Super League. He also added that with European Super League, it would change English football for a lifetime.

All six Premier leagues withdrew from the plans on April 20, Tuesday – After the worldwide criticism and protest. Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City & United, Liverpool, and Tottenham had withdrawn their plans. After 48 hours, when the report of the super league was dropped like a bombshell, Prime Minister Boris Johnson was among those who criticized the company publicly.

Along with football’s regional governing bodies, FIFA took a risk by threatening to ban players and clubs from World Cup and international competition if they try to engage in the greedy plan of the Super League.

As stated by FIFA, “A club or a player that will be involved in such a competition would face a consequence of not being allowed to participate in any organized competition by FIFA – or their respective confederation.” The statement was signed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and his counterparts at the six governing bodies.

There are speculations that the European Super League will usher at the end of the Champions League, the most famous cup competition in world football. If the European super league will push through, it would most likely negatively affect domestic competitions, such as grassroots – and as clubs would be focused on the breakaway competition due to the amount of money at stake.

Will Super League Push Through?

As of April 21, 2021 – eight of twelve teams that first confirmed to be breaking away to join the European Super League have withdrawn. If you’re wondering why, then the answer is simple. No matter how big a club is, no club is bigger than its fans. And for the eight teams that first confirmed, their bombshell announcement has brought a dispute all over the football world.
